Tanja Babic – Composition No. 5
Despite being an abstract painter, Babic claims that she “never fled from the forms that were born in a rational way.” Her compositions are everything but figurative, each nebulous streak of colour melting into the next, but as she describes, they’re not anti-representational. Although the formless shapes don’t clearly depict any given thing, they shift and transform under the viewer’s gaze in a way that emulates a landscape, a seascape, or a thing that’s still subject to gravity. Composition No. 5 is balanced around a thin line that divides the canvas in half, creating a striking visual balance. This detail—and her bold, rounded, legible signature—keep the abstract piece feeling level and grounded.
