Alexandra Ramirez – The Drunk Dancer & Icy Nightfall
In works like The Drunk Dancer, Alexandra Ramirez shows an allegiance to cubist ideals; shattered lines cut across the figure, bending and twisting limbs across different planes into a three dimensional form. But even in works like Icy Nightfall which depict a more two-dimensional form, Ramirez still shows a cubist painterly sensibility by reaching outside the canvas, and literally reshaping the flat picture plane. She strives to create “rigorously illogical” paintings by stretching canvases into obscure polygons, and in Icy Nightfall the edges of the canvas gently ripple, reminding the viewer of the legacy of cubism in contemporary painting.
