Artist Statement PAUL ELMES
I began by reusing old lino cut prints made at school to form grid collage pieces. The ‘leaf’ motif developed from a doodle I made whilst at art college from fleur-de-lys patterned wallpaper in a pub in Ardwick, Manchester. I continually doodle this motif to the point where the lines have become more fluid and rounded. This natural form contrasts with the linear squares.
Using a collage of found visual backgrounds mounted on paper, I then either paint or screen-print the leaf motif onto these squares. These random elements generate interesting colour combinations and visual textures. I am currently experimenting using paint only.
